It all began because there was nothing good to listen to on the radio...
Broadcasting from a warehouse in San Francisco, our high quality MP3 internet broadcasts reach around the world. Rusty Hodge, SomaFM's founder, had been experimenting with online radio since 1995. After helping other companies with their streaming media operations, he decided that no one was going to create the online radio station he wanted to listen to, so he did it himself.
We have always believed that there are plenty of people out there who would really get into the music we play once they discovered us.
Where does the name Soma come from? It's a play on words. Soma is the name of many things, but in our case is based on the future's perfect pleasure drug and the fact that we started broadcasting from San Francisco's South of Market underground club area, known also as SoMa.
Ogni Paese ha un lato nascosto. In Germania per esempio il naturismo (Freikörperkultur) ha una lunga tradizione, particorlamente tra i tedeschi dell'Est, colloquialmente chiamati "Ossis" ( da Ost che significa Est, ndr). Nato per combattere l'urbanesimo della rivoluzione industriale e riavvicinare i cittadini alla natura, divenne durante gli anni della DDR una delle poche libertà concesse dal regime comunista: agli "Ossis" non era permesso spostarsi nell'Ovest ma era concesso liberarsi dei vestiti nelle rive dei laghi o nelle bianche spiaggie del Baltico.
Una tradizione che, a ben vedere, continua e si ripete come ho avuto modo di constatare la scorsa settimana durante un breve soggiorno a Dresda. Davanti ad un centro commerciale alcune ragazze protestavano con estrema "naturalezza" contro l’eccessivo utilizzo di imballaggi per la vendita dei prodotti di consumo e offrivano spiegazioni alla domanda “Ask me why I am naked”. Come dargli torto?
The "B-side" of Dresden
Every country has a hidden side. In Germany for example naturism (Freikörperkultur) has a long tradition especially among East Germans also called "Ossis" (in German Ost means East). It was born a the end of XIX century to contrast the urbanization of the industrial revolution and to bring people back to nature. In the former DDR naturism became really popular under communist rule and "Ossis" enjoyed naturist holidays by the lakes or in the white sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea.
Nowadays that tradition continues indeed. In fact, people in East Germany still find themselves pretty comfortable with it as I noticed last week in Dresden. In front of a shopping mall there were some girls campaigning against product packaging in a really interesting way. They wore just a white apron with the following sentence "Ask me why I am naked". We do support them, don't we?
Circa mille georgiani vivono e lavorano a Berlino. Erano almeno duecento quelli che, questo pomeriggio,hanno partecipato al sit-in contro la guerra organizzato davanti alla sede del Ministero degli Esteri della Germania. Sotto un cielo insolitamente (?)autunnale ho scattato alcune foto. Le pubblico con un pensiero particolare rivolto a L., A. e alla sua famiglia augurando che i negoziati in corso portino ad una rapida cessazione delle ostilità.

A Georgian afternoon.
About a thousand Georgians live and work in Berlin. At least two hundred of them took part this afternoon in the sit-in against war organised in front of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Even if it was raining, I took some pictures. I publish them thinking particularly about L., A. and her family, and wishing that the ongoing negotiations will lead to a rapid cessation of hostilities.
Al civico 31 della Greifenhagenerstr. di Berlino c'è un ristorante cinese dal nome improbabile (WOK SHOW, ndr) ma dai contenuti originali, soprattutto se confrontati con i “soliti” ristoranti cinesi. La prima particolarità è che il proprietario è anche un artista e per questo la sala si presenta come una galleria d’arte. La seconda è che il cibo è ottimo: una festa di sapori e freschezze che esprimono il meglio negli “Jiao-zi”, una via di mezzo tra i pilmeni russi e i culurgiones sardi, facendo dimenticare le tradizionali fritture cariche di olio o l’anatra arrosto con il maiale in agrodolce. E’ qui che questo pomeriggio ho seguito, insieme ad alcuni miei colleghi, la cerimonia di apertura delle Olimpiadi 2008 di Pechino. Una cerimonia memorabile, cinquemila anni di storia in una notte. Creatività, idealismo e ottimismo uniti a professionalità, rigorosità e precisione. Per cinque ore ho guardato la Cina da una prospettiva diversa, e desidero considerarla per quello che vedo: è la gentilezza della mia collega cinese, il sorriso della signora che gestisce il ristorante, il desiderio di emancipazione e di miglioramento di intere generazioni di cinesi. Tutto questo non deve far dimenticare le contraddizioni, il Tibet e anche le sfide che la crescita cinese porta con sé. Ma stasera preferisco pensare a cinquemila anni di storia vissuti in una notte. Five thousand years in one night. Walking in Greifenhagenerstr. 31 Berlin there is a Chinese restaurant called “Wok Show”. The name does not sound so special, but this place is unique when compared with “traditional” Chinese restaurants abroad. The first peculiarity is that the owner is also an artist and so the room looks like an art gallery. The second is that the food is excellent: an explosion of tastes and flavours that express the best in the "Jiao-zi", something in between Russian pilmeni and Sardinian culurgiones. It was there that this afternoon I followed together with some of my colleagues the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. A memorable ceremony, five thousand years of history in one night. Creativity, idealism and optimism combined with professionalism, rigour and precision. For five hours I looked at China from a different perspective, and I want to see it as it appears: it is the kindness of my Chinese colleague, the smile of the lady who manages the restaurant and the desire for emancipation and improvement of entire generations of Chinese people. All this should not obscure the contradictions, Tibet and also the challenges that China's growth brings with it. But tonight I prefer to think about five thousand years of history lived in one night.

Don't let the noisy of other's opinions ....... and most important have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Il vostro tempo è limitato, per cui non lo sprecate vivendo la vita di qualcun altro. Non fatevi intrappolare dai dogmi, che vuol dire vivere seguendo i risultati del pensiero di altre persone. Non lasciate che il rumore delle opinioni altrui offuschi la vostra voce interiore. E, cosa più importante di tutte, abbiate il coraggio di seguire il vostro cuore e la vostra intuizione. In qualche modo loro sanno che cosa volete realmente diventare. Tutto il resto è secondario.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots.

Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
My second story is about love and loss.
It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
My third story is about death.

The Italian artist Maura Saddi was born on 1959 in Carbonia on the island of Sardinia. Having passed through an initial descriptive phase, Saddi began to focus on geometric abstraction. Her first exhibit was presented in 1979. In 2000 Saddi established her own studio "Studiospace" (Spaziostudio) located in the Piazza Venezia in Cortoghiana- mining allocation planned by the architect Saverio Muratori, having risen in the vicinity of the mine’s namesake.

Henri Cartier-Bresson Tra il '51 e il '73, compie numerosi viaggi in Italia. Nell'estate del 1962, la rivista internazionale "Vogue" gli commissiona un reportage sulla Sardegna, dove trascorre una ventina di giorni. Immortala la gente in maniera discreta e senza forzature, preferendo alla nascente ed elitaria Costa Smeralda, come del resto era stato per la Penisola, i luoghi della tradizione: Mamoiada, San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes, Orosei, Cala Gonone, Orgosolo, Orani – ospite dell’amico Costantino Nivola –, Desulo, Oliena, Nuoro e Cagliari.
Renato Soru (picture La Presse) is the President of the Sardinia Region. On 1997 founded Tiscali and became the most important internet player in Italy. In 2003, at 46, he decided to go into politics, launching "Project Sardinia" on the centre-left, committed to checking the despoliation of the coastline by what he called "savage tourism". One year later, Mr Soru swept to power as president of the Sardinian region. His first act, to the fury of the developers, was to freeze all building within two kilometres (1.25 miles) of the coast. "This is a measure that will protect Sardinia and Sardinians for the next 500 years," he said.
As more and more of the Mediterranean is essentially destroyed by resort tourism, the message is bound to spread. Mr Soru's new role as "Ambassador for the Coasts" in the UN's Environment Programme gives him the chance to spread the word.
Despite his businness success he is an unlikely politician. You would never call him charismatic: he was and remains painfully shy. He speaks in a soft monotone, as if talking to himself; unlike every other Italian in the world, his hands remain motionless.
